Occasionally these drilled clam shells will come in marked as shell pendants or ornaments.  In reality, they were used as hoes and are frequently found on Mississippian culture sites.  A wood or bone handle would have been inserted through the perforation and the shell is fairly strong with a natural bit area. This example was found on a site near Madisonville, Hamilton Co., Ohio.
